Stick drift in a game but not in a browser test
Camera movement in a game and stick values shown in a browser may reflect different conditions. A mismatch does not establish that the game is faulty or that the controller is healthy. Start by checking that both observations involve the same controller and connection.

Make the comparison consistent
- Identify the affected stick: movement on the left or camera control on the right? Record any custom mapping.
- Use the same controller and USB or Bluetooth connection. With several controllers attached, select the correct device in the tester.
- Open the stick drift test. Move and release the sticks, then follow the on-screen instructions. Avoid touching the controller during the resting observation.
- Do not base the conclusion on one momentary reading. Repeat the check; record a changed connection or mapping as a separate attempt.
Compare the game's input settings
A game's deadzone and response curve can change how small stick movements affect the screen. A Steam Input configuration may introduce additional settings. Valve documents deadzone, response curve and anti-deadzone as separate controls. Steam Input documentation
Save a screenshot of your current settings. Change one setting, then compare the same scene in the game. Resetting several settings together makes the cause harder to identify. Names and available options vary by game.
Example comparison record
These are illustrative situations, not measurements from a physical controller.
| Attempt | Observation | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Same controller and connection, browser test | No obvious offset appeared in this attempt | The cause of the in-game behavior remains unresolved |
| Same game scene, only deadzone changed | Unwanted movement decreased | The setting affects this configuration; it does not establish a hardware repair |
| Stick released, check repeated | Input offset appeared repeatedly | Further investigation using the model's support instructions may be useful |
Choose the next step
If the issue appears in only one game, review that game's control settings and support documentation. If it repeats across environments, share the model, connection and reproduction steps with manufacturer support. Use the deadzone test to examine near-center input separately. Hiding movement with a setting is not a physical repair; the methodology explains the limits of the result.
